Ever going through your Twitter or Google Reader feed in a hurry, and want to read that article but just don't have the time. You could favourite or star it, but then you would have to go back and look for it, and then still have to open up the link and view the article with ads and other distractions on the side. Well, now you can easily avoid all this, and
Read it Later with a new service called Pocket. Pocket was formerly
Read It Later, and was a paid service. It is now available for free, and it is truly amazing. You can easily add the extension or bookmarklet to your browser to save any article for reading later, and the extension adds a "read later" button to Twitter and Google Reader. On iOS, you can integrate Pocket with the Twitter app and many other news apps to easily read later. You can also add the bookmarklet to mobile Safari, and save any webpage from there. What's nice is that all of your articles from all your devices are saved to the same account and you can easily read them. Reading articles on Pocket is kind of like reading articles in
reader in mobile Safari, and we really like the way it focuses only on the article.
Pros:
- fast
- integration with Google Reader and Twitter
- iOS integration with apps
- free
- great mobile apps and web client
- ability to tweet the content you are reading very easily
Cons:
- if you paid for "Read it Later", you might be upset
- setting up mobile Twitter and other apps to work with it is a bit of a hassle
- a small fraction of articles will appear in web view, and no article view will be available
- you might not see all "images" and "videos" in their respective view areas
Besides the minor problems, Pocket is an amazing service, and we definitely recommend it.
